“It is never a question of whether or not Christians will be engaged in politics, but rather the question is always how?”
“Christianity, social justice and political engagement are inseparable.”
Two comments, the first from Stanley Hauerwas the second from Steve Chalke, about Christianity and politics – or faith and public life – showing that these topics are intertwined. Indeed, as I point out in my introduction (and elsewhere), ‘Engaging Politics?’ sets out to show that non-involvement is a non-option for Christians. I continue: “The Christian political retreat was, and remains, sub-Christian at best; at worst it was a deliberate denial of the gospel. Christ was political – “Christ” as a title was seen as a political, kingly title. He was put to death for sedition, treason. He was not put to death for mouthing some religio-philosophical platitudes for people to live by in their private lives.”
Are you dissatisfied with the way your faith does, or doesn’t tie in with your political environment?
Does ‘Engaging Politics?’ help you see your way in the maze? Or are you still confused?
